These model scams and these so-called photographer pricks piss me off

A girl recently told me about being scammed by a photographer, and how she had avery iffy and unsafe experience. She told me how the so-called photographer made her feel uncomfortable. This always bothers me to hear of girls being taken advantage of in front of the camera. And the best way to skip crappy situations is to beaware of them. Don't put yourself in a position to get scammed or degrade your modeling goals and potential. Skip the Internet model sites, and here is my reply which might help you see the light on why the Internet-age and the word model don't unite well:

I'm sorry to hear you encountered a not so wonderful experience while pursuing modeling, I don't support model sites because most of the time you will run into amatuers and those who are not serious or professional. I wrote about some of my mistakes in my memoir Almost 5'4" and purposely wrote abotu it to encourage girls to skip that route. While it might make you feel like a model to post photos of yourself on a model site, real models don't typically do that. Real agencies aren't scouting the web for models and real photographers typically are not marketing themselves on those sites. Becareful to be selective about who you shoot with. Those sites can quickly encourage a girl to assume Time for Print means getting nude for the hell of it, or she can be misled to think having an hourly rate is the direction to go to get professional photos and real modeling work. Those sites are typically similar to photography porn and I would skip them.

It's best to work with a professional photographer, someone who understands the industry, who has built a strong portfolio from their years of experience and has clients from the advertising and editorial work. You will have to fork out some money, pay for professional modeling photographs. Your experience will be better when you know the shots you need and work with a photographer who knows what print modeling is.

A photographer who knows what print modeling is will understand the type of photos you need to market yourself realistically for print modeling. You'll get shots that benefit your modeling goals and pursuits, not just pretty photos, you'll get what matters. If you're short, under 5'7" then there are certain photos you need to pursue print modeling, which is the area of modeling for all types and sizes.

It's best to study print modeling and print modeling ads before you shoot, get an idea of the shots you need, look at commercials for cell phones, fast food, lifestyle products, hair, beauty, any ad that invovles a model smiling is typically a print model. I would be realistic and not expect to be jetset -traveling around the world and working with high fashion magazines-as a shorter model, but there are opportunities out there if you have the right photos to market your assets in the right ways and target the right agencies within print modeling.

Some posts from my blog that should inspire you and your photos and share with the photos you need and some things to be aware of when it comes to finding a photographer who understands print modeling :)

Put it this why: Focus on gettin what you need and you're more likely to skip scams and jerks... And paying for professional photos is best. Make sure you know the shots you need because you don't have to pay $$$$ a ton for them but you do need professional shots and professional doesn't mean extra make up and glamour it means shots that represents you are a great print model with personality and photographs of you that represent the real you. A smiling shot/headshot is the main thing to focus on getting. Ex: a shot that looks like the girls on the hair dye boxes in the drug store, smiling, fresh, pretty, natural. :)

Favorite Little Thing: Comfy Slippers for the modeling job and every day

Hey Girls,

Height isn’t everything and something that has helped me book modeling jobs as a shorter-than-average model is being aware of my assets and take care of them.

I might not have the height for the runway but my foot has helped me get in the door with modeling, literally. Because I'm a size 6 shoe I've done a lot of shoe modeling work with national brands but just having the right shoe size isn't all it takes to be a shoe model. Taking care of my skin and feet has been a big part of it and here are three things that help me book the job:

Moisturizing-usually right after the shower and before I get dressed in the morning. Make it routine to nourish your skin. Carry travel-size lotion in your modeling bag.

Exfoliate-don’t forget your feet when you use that body scrub in the shower, also your leftover morning coffee grinds mixed with some shower gel makes a great home-made exfoliation treatment.

Soothing care-keeping your feet less strained (like resisting to wear high heels non-stop) is important. When you're not strutting around and striving having a pair of comfy slippers is ideal for a model especially when you're at home, at a casting or on the job because there will be waiting periods and breaks and it's best to keep your feet relaxed and looking pretty.

Also no matter what type of modeling job you have booked, whether it's for an accessories catalog or a fitness magazine being comfortable makes you feel more confident and a pair of slippers is a must-have for any aspiring model. Make sure they are in your modeling bag.

Here are a few pairs of comfy women’s slippers that caught my eye recently that would be a perfect choice:

Another important thing to have for comfort during modeling jobs is a robe. Sometimes the stylist won't have one for you and it's a good thing to bring your own just in case.

Being prepared with your must-have model items makes you less stressed and when your calm you can focus better on bringing your assets forward to prove that height isn't everything!

Have you caught a segment of Remodeled on the CW? Paul Fisher makes over modeling agencies? It might give you insight into the scams to look for and the difference between a legit agency and a BS one and also what goes on at an agency and the business side of modeling as well. I haven't caught a segment but I'll try to tune in and give some insight. On the site it reads: (Paul Fisher) He has two missions: to make sure agents in small towns no longer get screwed, and to empower models to take control of their careers and lead healthier lives.

I do like that mission and for the second part about empowering models this could be interesting and a different type of here we go again another modeling show...I dig the inspiring take no shit type of attitude and on this blog I always promote to manage your own career and be prepared for your success and at the end of the day YOU are your own Agent! Who's afraid of a Plus-Size Model? Can expression lead to change?

Hey Girls,

Check this out, it caught my eye. PLUS Model Magazine's January issue shares a unique, creative, sexy and inspiring editorial of a nude plus size model, the editorial includes a plus size model and a fashion model hugging eachother tight and shows their difference of size, shot by photographer Victoria Janashvili.

The nude photo story in the magazine also features insight on the size change over the years of a fashion model and the average woman. Some of these changes the magazine features include:

-Twenty years ago the average fashion model weighed 8% less than the average woman. Today, she weighs 23% less.
- Ten years ago plus-size models averaged between size 12 and 18. Today the need for size diversity within the plus-size modeling industry continues to be questioned. The majority of plus-size models on agency boards are between a size 6 and 14, while the customers continue to express their dissatisfaction.
- Most runway models meet the Body Mass Index physical criteria for Anorexia.
- 50% of women wear a size 14 or larger, but most standard clothing outlets cater to sizes 14 or smaller.

I liked the blunt images and rawness in the magazine, edgy but well done, (def not commercial print images but) images that make a statement and the editorial is like a Public Service Announcement for the fashion world, for marketers creating concepts for their next campaigns, for designers out there that are open minded to thinking about designing for the masses. Plus-size model Katya Zharkova looks totally beautiful head to toe. And keep turning the pages of the magazine because Laura Wells editorial in magazine also looks stunning.

I wonder if the Marketing Professionals, Booking Editors, Art Directors, Designers and all of the ones deciding on the models, casting models, hiring models, and booking models care though?

Did the model have to be naked to make a statement? I like artistic and body related editorials that have a classy appeal. But I don't think the editorial had to have a nude plus size model to create a voice, I think the editorial could have shown the model in clothing and still made a strong statement. But for the WOW value the nudity was done in a pretty way.

Maybe the more the desire for change is expressed the more retailers and brands will wake up and include models of all sizes in their advertising campaigns...maybe with more talk about all sizes spreading among the media and on online platforms the demand of all sizes being seen and all sizes being okay with the advertising world, will encouraged change to happen. We'll see. Time will tell. I wish more campaigns includes all types, not just giraffe fashion models or plus size models, but all shapes and sizes and ethnicities more often.

The full moon last night.

Let's hear it for the Girls! Incase you didn't know this about me: History means a lot to me. The roots of all we have and know today are important to me and I mostly love learning about the history of things because of the stories that are uprooted of the people from that period and how what we have today reflects the past so much. I enjoyed reading the feature in the January issue of Vogue on Me...ryl Streep, really intrigued me and not just because she is the oldest covergirl, I was inspired because the article mentioned this website that will hopefully become a real museum one day, http://www.nwhm.org/education-resources/ and read about Meryl Streep's efforts and passion to bring the National Women’s History Museum to life here: http://www.vogue.com/magazine/article/meryl-streep-force-of-nature/ I do believe girls of all ages need to hear more stories of women in history from all walks of life, I think it could really make a difference on their mindset and lives. I recently watched a documentary on Susan B Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, two very different women, from different backgrounds and who lived different types of lives, but who worked together and made great things happen for the women's rights movement and I was like "How did I not know all of this!!" In school we only get a very small slice, a teeny weeny amount of info in history class. I think this is sad. So it's up you to choose to find out more. Learning about women in history can be inspiration for our own dreams, and our women-heroes should be more influential than girls singing about lollipops and their milkshakes. I also wanted to share some books that I enjoy when I need some inspiration in my life, they are not history books at first glance, but through reading them I've been able to dive into a different time period and see what life was like then and I've loved that aspect too, Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls, Seabiscuit by Laura Hillenbrand, Chanel: A Woman of Her Own by Axel Madsen, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou. ~IJ

A pretty little memorable day in the city (pics)

I hope your weekend has been relaxing and fun, and inspiration finds you. I started out with my husband today earlier than usual and got to lunch before 1 p.m at Rodeo Bar, yeeehaw, at
375 3rd Avenue, New York, NY 10016 http://www.rodeobar.com/

Then we went over to Kalustyan's shopping for tea and spices and mushroom curry and Aloo Palak :)

And then this little Old Print Shop nearby caught our eye and checked it out. And made our way up Lexintong Avenue then heading towards Lord and Taylor on Fifth Ave and 38th.

It's fun to explore and notice different stores and the architecture in Murray Hill going towards Midtown, there's a nice mix of old and new. At Lord and Taylor the first stop was the shoes of course! Right away these HUNTER rain boots really stood out. I didn't have a pair of good rain boots actually, so they were sort of a must-have and I plan to wear them forever and I hope it rain because I can't wait to walk through puddled in them! Also, in Lord & Taylor there were some great cashmere sales 40% off already reduced, and I picked up two sweaters, one black v-neck and a navy turtleneck! Mmmm warm! And I browsed around the Petite Shop, and I really like that they have a petite department!

I hope it rains or snows soon so I can wear these boots! Our bag though didn't totally make it home in one piece home. :)

Where is your peaceful place? I think it's important for us to have a peaceful place, a place we feel relaxed, calm, can enjoy the quiet or good times. Mine is in the middle section of our curved sectional couch, sitting there I feel hugged and cozy, I look out into the city lights or the river and think. ~Isobella Jade

The real chinatown in Shanghai, the Lingering Gardens and a street market

If you get to Shanghai, get out of Shanghai and go see some of the awesome small towns nearby, like Suzhou and go to the Lingering gardens. Here are some pics from the Lingering Gardens.

The artistic windows are supposed to remind you of a painting each time you look through them and the crane is a symbol for longevity.

The highlight of the Lingering Gardens. See that stone, that's a prize stone! Read about Chinese scholars' rocks here.

The silk museum in Suzhou is okay and kind of interesting to see silk worms but you can skip it because it becomes a sad tourist trap to buy silk comforters, unless you need a silk comforter. :)

A Shanghai street market, in the Old City, I wonder what will happen to this market once that building on the left is up. Prob move to a different street (Eels!)

Happy New Year!!! This year wasn't all roses, when I look back it was a really tough year, it's the year my Dad died and losing him suddenly was a daily challenge to come to grips with, still is, but the gift of this year is a strong value of time and how precious it is and how thankful I am to have today, this moment and now, and my family and friends. Things I already was thankful for now have even more new meaning and with this coming year my resolution is to volunteer my time and what I can to causes that touch my heart because I really have been very fortunate and this year has brought out that it's not just about me anymore it's about others :) I hope your 2012 involves a lot of love, togetherness and inspiration! ~Isobella

Hey Girls,

Here are some more pics from adventures in Beiking over the Christmas holiday.

We visited the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall. It's more challenging but less tourists. It was amazing and peaceful looking off at the landscape around.

I climbed all that behind me, just kidding, just from the closest tower you see.

Being a model is being an independent contractor

Hey Girls,

Recently in a commen on this blog a girl asked me about and modeling agencies and if it was legit to give the agency your social security number when you are freelancing / working non-exclusive with the agency.

My reply might help your own pursuits.

No matter if you are freelancing or not, the agency has to file taxes by law on their bookings (So you do) so the agency needs your social security number for that. Giving your social security to your agency is the same as giving it if you worked a corporate job. Keep in mind as a model you are also like a small business. The business is your time spent on modelnig gigs and the money you make from modeling jobs. You are an Independent Contractor and a "sole proprietor" and no taxes are taken out of your check usually for modeling jobs so you do have to keep track of what you make as a model. (side note: I have had situations where by mistake the client paid me when I filled out a W9 on the job or something for a commercial and I received the check and I had to send my agency 20% (which is standard) by check in the mail because it got sent directly to me by mistake). At the end of the year if you made I think over 600 dollars with the agency you will be sent a 1099 form. The reason your agency wants you to give the client their info is for payment process. Usually you won't have to give the info out and the client will already know where to send the check--to the agency. The agency is sending you to this booking, and they did the work to get you the opportunity and they are your agency (even if freelancing) so when the client pays for the model's time/for the job, the client sends the check to the agency and the agency takes out 20% cut and cuts you a check from their own checkbook. So your check would read the agencies name and info...not the clients. That's how it is and that's the professional way. The agency books you the job the client pays the agency the agency pays you and takes their cut, and for taxe purposes the agency will report what they made that year, hence why they need your social. Just make sure you have done your research on the agency and their reputation before you share all your personality information.

Also keep track of your receipts for things you spent related to a modeling job or for a castings that led to a modeling job. Business-related expenses A.K.A modeling-job-related expenses such as products, services or items you've purchased which you've used on the job, such as a manicure, a pedicure, an eyebrow tweeze for a beauty related job could count. Usually the client will reimburse you for these expenses and your agency will ask for receipts for the manicure, etc if it was needed for the job and give the receipts to the client who will include this reimbursement in your payment, which will be sent to the agency and then sent to you from the agency.

Other wise, these expenses that are job related still may be able to be written off during tax time.

So set money aside for your taxes and keep a list/receipts of what you spent that is modeling related. Such as a new portfolio and comp cards.

Your modeling agency is like a business resource/element for your business...you are the business.

Hey Girls,

It's the little things that mean the most in the world, little acts of kindness, the time and thoughts and care we give to others means something. Our goodness means something to the energies and people around us.

Not everyone can donate hundreds and thousands to charities, but no matter your income I hope in your life you have a foundation or cause in mind that touches your heart, because here's an idea for how you can give throughout the year, through your change rattling around in your handbag.

I save all my change, you know when you go run errands and you find that you're carrying around all this change in your bag and it's weighing you down, well I throw it in a cup every day and at the end of the month I have least $12, sometimes a lot more, sometimes $30 or $40 in change.

Our change can make change right? So, think about a cause that means something to your heart and at the end of the month, not just at the holidays but throughout the year, when you can, your pocket change or rattling around handbag change can help to help others.

Money isn't everything either, volunteering is also a great way to give. Grab some girlfriends and spend the day by working with a charity, volunteering at a fundraiser, reading to kids, helping out at a food bank.

Happy Holidays, remember the best gifts to give someone can simply be to listen or be there for them, to care, and your time is precious.

Full Body Part Modeling

Hey Girls,

As a body part model putting my great skintone, proportioned body, legs, back and curves to use has helped me book work despite being shorter than a high fashion model. Within parts modeling hand modeling and foot modeling are known as prime areas but also there is eye modeling, lip modeling and so much more. A full body parts model is a model that could model using her "parts" from head to toe. And to pursue body part modeling the "right" body shots are important to have.

Here is some insight on the type of photos that are best for full body modeling.

The fact that it's a body shot doesn't mean it has to scream overly sexy, in fact it's better if it doesn't. Think about editorials and ads for health, fitness, beauty. There are beautiful body shots in these magazines.

The shots should be clean and pretty and have a natural appeal, not a lot of makeup and hair styling, no pouty lips or smokey eyes needed-- just more real and natural, you being you.

Keep in mind the law: Even if you are comfortable with your body you should not be shot nude or semi-nude until you are 18 or older. It's illegal actually and if nude photos of a girl under age are published it's even a felony. And be aware of model releases that involve proof of your age. Also you should be extremely careful about choosing a photographer and the type of shots you have taken and to be exposed, make sure you are shooting with a professional photographer you are comfortable working with and who understands your modeling goals. You want to produce shots in good taste and shots that are realistically marketable for print modeling (so keep in mind print modeling agencies don't typically like overly sexy shots).

Your photographs do represent your image and your goals and abilities as a model, and especially in print modeling there is a line between trashy and classy and it is best to stay on the classy side.
If you are curious about the type of body shots that have a health, beauty and skincare appeal, study ads and editorials on health, beauty and fitness magazines. Yes, in women's magazines you do see the body in editorials for health and beauty especially before the summer time months. The idea is to keep the shots you create female consumer friendly. A shot your female friend could see and wouldn't think is slutty, she would think it is pretty. A photo that is showing your beautiful self and pretty skin tone in a classy way.

There is a certain approach and style of photographer that is acceptable for body parts modeling that doesn't cross the line into trashy, to create a body shot that is beautiful and classy and has a print modeling vibe. But most likely it won't be a shot that is something that has a strong sex appeal. Print modeling is a lot more tame and less glamourized.

I hope this helps your modeling pursuits and remember height isn't everything but it helps to know your assets and manage your photography goals and be a good model marketer! Aim high and strive on!

My Apple Store Grand Central visit preview pics

Hey, Here are some random pics taken from random visitors and an Apple employee, today at the Grand Central store opening day! I did work on my upcoming YA novel for a little bit at the store today.

That's my computer for an hour today, the store is very comfortable, no one rushed me to get off, the vibe feels very airy and open and feels a little awkward in the sense of being in this beautiful building, beautiful architecture of Grand Central, it's a bit intense, and I over heard someone say it felt like being at a bank, with the tables and lights on them. The store- or more-like-the -open space-as I'd think of it, was busy, well, of course! It was their first day, and it's Apple! But I'm sure I won't be the only regular, and the music is good.

The other direction shot. Worked for about an hour at the Grand Central Apple store on a 13-inch MacBook Pro. I helped this guy next to me when he asked how to close out of yahoo, I told him to clear his history too, so no one will know what you do at the Apple store :)

Are your modeling photos hurting your chances?

Hey Girls,

I believe what you put into your pursuits leads to what you get. Striving to work as a model, book gigs, work with an agency all comes down to your own will to try. There is usually no "discovery process" for a print model and getting opportunities comes down to your own behind the scenes effort. On this blog I write often about the prep work involved with preparing for your success and the importance of setting goals. I really think striving as a model is about becoming a good marketer.

Model marketing isn't just flaunting your photos, it's about carefully planning the photos you use to market yourself and having your professional model marketing tools, a comp card, a portfolio and knowing how to actually model a product naturally.

Model marketing is really knowing your assets, knowing where you fit into the industry of images and selling products. And making sure you are marketing yourself with the right photos. It is important to understand what your role is as a model.

Modeling is about selling products, models are hired to fit the vibe of a brand or product, and when you are shorter keep in mind you will have to put to use other assets beyond your height, so it's more about using your personality, and a smile shot will help you a lot more than another pouty glamour shot.

To work with print modeling agencies remember it's less about measurements and more about bringing to life the image of a product or brand through your personality on camera, and do it in a natural and pretty way.

You could feel confident about modeling but your photos could be all wrong and the way you are marketing yourself could be affecting your chances.

Recently I saw the comp card of a girl who has a good look, good skin, but on her comp card she didn't have a "personality" shot. A shot that shows she has something extra, a spunk, an energy, a happiness about her. Print modeling is about lifestyle ad campaigns, involving every day products and modeling with products that most people use, it's different than high fashion...and most of these lifestyle ads involve the model smiling while holding or using the product, like a cell phone. So, even though this girl has a good look, it doesn't matter, if she isn't targeting the area of modeling which she can find opportunities, in fact she is missing opportunities.

The light weight cotton is comfy for night time and also during the day, the V-neck cut does cut kind of low, but it's still classy. Also the shirts are cut long so you can pull it over your butt alittle with some skinny jeans perhaps. Here I am wearing their XS.

Okay it feels like Christmas is coming now. The Salvation Army bell ringers. The snowflake lights on Fifth Ave. The Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center. I'm going to be in China over the holidays but going to get a little real Christmas tree, a real small one, at one of those deli's on the corner anyways.

On the way to see the tree saw this pretty sight too of the Chrysler Building.

A question on finding petite modeling agencies and open calls answered.

A girl recently wrote me and asked, "I'm 5'5" and interested in petite/commercial print modeling. I am going to NY, and have a residence there and in LA. I want to visit modeling agencies that are interested in petite models. How do I go about finding those agencies and if so, do most of them have open calls? Thank you."

My reply might also help your own modeling pursuits.

There are very few petite modeling agencies (if any out there) and there are very few agencies in general that bluntly announce they work with petite models, but print modeling is the area to pursue although print modeling agencies don't typically call themselves petite modeling agencies (why? Because most of their clients, marketers, editors are not asking for a short chick). Print modeling agencies and talent agencies work with print models of all types it is more about the commercial advertising world than high fashion. So the models are modeling lifestyle products, every day products we all use, not high end fashions. The models within print modeling are very diverse in type and age, so the area to pursue no matter your height would be print modeling, it is an area for all sizes and ages and ethnicities. And it's an area where personality matters more than measurements. To prepare to approach these agencies and meet these agencies I would be sure to do a few things:

1. Make sure you have the right photos you market your assets in a professional way that is fitting for print modeling. Without the right photos you miss opportunities since your photos are what get you booked for work as a model. Make sure your photographer knows what print modeling is and make sure you plan your photos carefully. Be very selective about the photos you use to market yourself as a model.
2. Print modeling agencies do not have open calls typically, follow the directions on the agencies website, usually it will tell you how they would like submissions sent, which can often mean you need to mail the agency by postal mail your comp card. Having a comp card also makes you appear more prepared for your modeling pursuits and here is more on the differences between fashion models and print models when it comes to working with the agency.
3. Being prepared for your success is how you get opportunities and achieve your goals, so be ready for the real work of crafting photos, mailing agencies and learning how to model products naturally because modeling is more about relating to a product than your measurements in print modeling. Becoming a good marketer is a big part of it.

Should you move to a new city to model? Answered

A girl recently asked me about moving to another city or country to model and how to prepare and if it is a good idea. My reply might help your own modeling pursuits:

There is no for sure guaranteed success when you work with an agency. The agency books their models based on what the client is looking for. So it really is not easy to say for sure if you will be working a lot while working with one. It all depends. It's hard to say without trying. Sure you can send comp cards to agencies, however I wouldn't move to a country or city without having a backup plan, most print modeling agencies and talent agencies do not house their models and provide them with survival means, so rent is up to you and basic survival needs. Modeling is very competitive no matter your height, also it is VERY unstable (it can take 60 days to get paid for a job) so it is always best to have a backup plan for income. I would research the area you are considering to move to, think about your own future goals and ask yourself, "If modeling doesn't work out to be all I hope it will be, can I still survive there?" And "is this city have opportunities where I can use ALL my skill not only modeling?" Again, sure you could mail your photos to agencies to see if there is an interest, but remember even with interest doesn't mean that agency will set you up with a place to live and survival needs. Just want to be honest about that because many print models work non-exclusive with agencies and there is a difference when it comes to the relationship with the agency and what to expect. Also I think it's easier to move to a new city to model and adjust and find opportunities when you have experience already. Tearsheets, compcard, and a quality portfolio already prepared because you will be ahead of the crowd of aspiring models which could help your chances to get bookings. In the sky tips: I usually want to puke during the landing, so I warn the person sitting next to me just incase it happens. I know there are motion sickness medicines but usually I have skipped those and I turn on the air vent, sip water as we descend and close my eyes, I drink a lot of water on planes, I get really dehydrated when I fly and it can make me more nauseous. I keep my eyes on one thing before the landing, or think of a peaceful thought, a song, a quote I love or a conversation I had with someone I love. Or try to distract yourself from thinking about it.

Lighten the load and compact your travel on bags: Being short and small means carrying even my carry on bag can kick my ass hehe. Before traveling I rip out articles in magazines I've been wanting to read, so I don't have to carry all these magazines. I put the articles in my journal with a pen. I might offer the person next to me the articles when I'm done or I recycle them later. :)

I bring travel size lotion on the plane too because my hands can get dry up in the sky.

Fashion, Art and Model buzz that caught my eye

Hey Girls,

Well, well, we've slowly seen plus-size, curvy models in the pages of fashion magazines but really even plus-size models haven't even made a true mark yet in fashion, but what do you think, does the modeling world need plus-size male models? New York Magazine's blog The Cut asked this recently and shared this insight from modeling industry professionals, "Kogan from DNA says he and his colleagues don’t represent any plus-size male models because “there’s no demand for it,” adding, “we’re only providing a service; if there is a demand for it, we will provide for that. We’re not opposed to it on a principled level. But if we took on those models, they’re going to not work.”

I hope what stood out in this quote is that modeling agencies are a service, and they go with what is in demand, what their clients are asking for, so if you are wondering why at 5'3" you are having a hard time working with a fashion modeling agencies you are hitting up the wrong agencies, research print modeling agencies, they have clients that work with more humanistic and realistic models.

In my opinion, in the print modeling world of modeling we've already seen some models and actors in ads and commercials with a little bit of a beer gut. Print modeling is about personality. Why didn’t NY Magazine interview some print modeling agencies in the city? There is a market for plus-size male models because look around you many guys have love handles and beyond fashion these people shop at Home Depot and buy cars and technologies and home goods and travel, wear watches and even wear Armani underwear. A lot of people with a little squish have money to spend. Brands and advertisers should notice this more, not just fashion brands, but all types. Maybe GQ will do a plus-size male model spread. I bet they'd get a million submissions. The market is there, it's up to the brands to take advantage and sell it to these curvy guys, market it to them, create it they will come. I know Christmas is coming up so I want to get this out before I ruin the holiday cheer and store sales, hehe because there is nothing wrong with getting or receiving gifts (especially if it’s something you really wanted and someone special gave it to you and you put the time into a thoughtful gift), but I think about the word “want” a lot lately and this came to mind: In our world of want, when there is so much to consume, so much unneeded actually, it makes me wonder where does this want to have things without thinking about “why” we want it come from? It can’t just be ads and commercials, aren’t we smart enough to not be brainwashed to think we need something without thinking and debating for a second about why? Is it a social competition of “I want what you have” or “I want to have better and bigger than you have,” without really thinking about why? Is it the ego-driven desire or a lack of self-esteem for us to let the type of handbag we carry define our status as better, but without knowing anything about the history of the brand and logo being flaunted around by us? Maybe it’s for the sake of having the highest pile of crap in the end? When less energy gets put into what we ‘really’ want soon we forget about what we really like, what our opinions really are, and who we really are, and instead so much time and energy gets put into things that have no actual meaning towards the person we really are. Where does the mindset of “I want that” come from without a ‘because…’? When we think about the “why” we want something before we start to really dwell on wanting it, we might even find we don’t really want it at all and our reason to want it had no meaning for our true selves and then we may discover what we really want after all. ~Isobella Jade

Today when I walked into Sephora the greeter at the door smiled and said “Hi, Welcome to Sephora,” I said "Hi” back and smiled at her. While checking out the eye shadow kits on display I overheard the greeter lady say to another Sephora beauty expert, "Someone actually smiled back." It's just that someone smiling on the job these days really stands out to me and usually I smile back. What to wear for a print modeling photo shoot, and hair and makeup tips? Answered!

I was recently asked: My shoot will be in December and I am only 5'7" so I want to get involved in commercial/print modeling. What type of outfits would I bring to a shoot for this type of modeling? Also, I am African-American and have hair extensions, Do you think it is okay to take my photos with hair extensions or should I have completely my real hair ? Thanks!

I'm sure you are anxious for your photo shoot in December and I wanted to get back to you with some tips. Before you do the shoot however, I would make sure 100% that the photographer understands what print modeling is. And also I would rip out of magazines examples of print modeling ads and campaigns that can inspire you for the shoot.

I would shoot the way your hair is the most often. So how your hair looks most often is what is on your comp card. So shoot in extensions if you plan to always wear them. And if you don't, then plan to keep your hair natural. You want your hair the way it always is because after your shoot and when you create a modeling compcard you will be mailing it to agencies and you want to look like the girl on the comp card. They will most likely want to mee you if they are interested in working together and you will want to look just as you did on the comp card for this meeting and also for modeling castings you want to look how you look on a normal day. Which is also why it's a good idea to always keep the makeup natural, as the real you. NO over photoshopped. Tell photographer you don't want crazy photo shop and NO blowing out photos. This is about natural images...professional but very natural.

Later when you are sent on castings you will be expected to also look like the images on the comp card you created, which is why it's also a good idea to make sure how you do your hair, the length etc is important. I mention in my book Short Stuff: on the job with an x-small model (it's on BN.com and Amazon.com and my website) that once I cut my hair shorter and right afterwards I was booked for a modeling job and my hair was a lot shorter than what the client (job) involved so I had to panic and get extensions put in for it the night before the job and it was not fun and could have been a really bad experience--- so always keep your hair the way it is in your photos. Or else you will have to update your photos often and your agency on how your hair is and it can be a pain in the butt! :) Here are tips for what to wear/clothing selection and how the photos for print modeling should look and what they should involve, they are very basic actually because print modeling photos involve, real life scenarios--and the clothing is pretty simple.

Wear something that is classic and timeless, you don't want the shots to be extremely fashion forward because in print modeling it is not about the clothes usually, it's about the personality of the model and using your personality to market that product within the marketing campaign photos. Stick to solid colors, no ruffles or extreme flair that would distract from capturing your own personality and glow on camera. An example of a few outfit choices would be:

Basic black dress just above knee, keep it classy, a pair of cute heels, not super super super high -you don't want this photo to age or narrow you into --too fashion--too glamour--too sexy. You want it to be about personality and print modeling is really different than fashion modeling so make sure you know the differences too. (see below) Like a Marie Claire or Glamour magazine, the shot scenario could involve you getting ready or heading for the door, or walking outside, coming out of a car, before you go out with the girls...pretty but not WHOA crazy hair and makeup!
A workout or fitness outfit-the shot scenario involves you right before you go for a run maybe stretching, taking in fresh air, like Self magazine.

A close up beauty shot. Think health and beauty, very clean.

A more casual shot, in jeans and a cute sweater or shirt, scenario: you are talking to your best friend on the phone--smiling sweetly.

A shot where you are modeling with an accessories product, a handbag, earrings, a pen or a beauty product, etc. The focus is you and the product but not forced, the scenario is maybe you are leaning against a wall holding a handbag and lookin into it taking something out of it, it is a close up of the bag and you and also one pulled back, you decide which is better. Or maybe you are putting on your earrings or it is like a beauty shot and close up. Make the shot involve interacting with a product in a natural way.

Always think Ads, ads, ads, because print modeling is about product ads, so for the shot bring a real-life scenario to life and think about how it could show your personality and that you have a look that can work with many products.

No stiff jaw, no pout, no squinting eyes, all upbeat and friendly expressions ( close up shots obviously can have a more relaxed expression).

And NO logos within the shots for your clothing or the products you are holding/using/wearing. You don't want to later attend a casting for Essie nail polish when in your shot you are showing a nailpolish for another nail care brand. Keep it logo free...never show logos in your photos.

You would only show logos or have a logo involved within your comp card or portfolio when you book a job for the brand.

The best way to prepare your outfits is to study ads and editorials in magazines of all types for print modeling/lifestyle product ads. Keep in mind ads for every day items that people use, even tampon ads where the model is laughing or smiling, you will notice the ads are less about the clothing the model is wearing and more about their expression. The clothing is tamed down to something more every day where or not screaming a logo and extra dazzle.

Giving your skin a last minute natural glow it involves taking care of your inner self too

Hey Girls,

I was recently asked about using foundation on the skin, not just the face but other places, such as your feet, hands, legs, stomach, etc.

On modeling jobs for parts modeling sometimes the makeup artist there has created a mixture of foundation and lotion to make the models skin glow. Or I noticed they've use a light amount of NIVEA and Jergens natural glow and sun-kissed lotions.

To give skin a natural glow, use just a tiny dab of foundation mixed with larger amount of lotion. The tricky thing is that sometimes the color of your hands isn't the same as the foundation you use on your face, so you may have to find one that matches the tone of your hands, feet, legs, etc.

You don't want to over do the foundation part or else it will look obvious and ugly and can look off color, and you want to use more lotion than foundation. Less than a dime size amount of foundation, not a lot, just like when you put makeup on your face you don't need a lot of foundation if you spread it around carefully and well. Same here, with just the dab of foundation on your left finger, squirt some lotion (a quarter size amount or more) in the palm of your right hand, then mix the foundation evenly into the lotion in your hand then rub elsewhere. The point is to give your lotion just a tint of color but not over do it.

Also this mixture will help cover any of your blemishes and light scars as well. No one is totally flawless 100% all the time.

I'm very into the natural beauty, not cakey or heavy feeling makeup and the same goes for skincare, I like my lotions to be very light weight, that quickly absorb into the skin. And here is another tip for getting the most out of your lotions, especially when they aren't cheap. I used lotions of all types and this week at my casting I used Aveeno on my hands and feet and legs.

Look at how much I would have missed out on! Just when you think the lotion is all done, do like I do and cut your lotion in half when you have a plastic like this because there's a lot more inside! Scoop it out, your skin will love you for it! :) There is a whole lot that soemtimes doesn't come out and I like to use it all. I get at least 3 more uses usually by slicing my lotion bottle in half. And also always recycle your beauty product plastics. :)

Over all to keep skin looking healthy, youthful and glowing is to keep a positive attitude, negativity and frustration creates a hard and worn face and body. Also moisturize daily, especially right after of the shower because the heat of the shower makes your skin dry. So rub lotion on your face, neck, legs and other parts daily. Also keep in mind that how your skin looks on the outside has to do with what you are putting inside it, so skip greasy foods and drink a lot of water. Sometimes I add lemon to it to give it some flavor, water is moisture for the skin!

Even if you are not a parts model, you can still keep your skin looking great for the camera.

And remember, give your inner self some love too, daily try to expand your mind and discover something you didn't know, be aware of those around you and help someone else when you can, and grow each day, if not in inches than with the depth your mind and heart.

hand modeling it's important to know how to model products naturally

Hey Girls,

Just got out of a hand and foot casting for a beauty retailer and often at castings you are asked to hold the product and then show it off in a variety of ways...its all you, they don't always tell you how to hold the product. Today I was told to "hold this in a few different ways." The different ways were up to me and it wasn't like I was going to say I don't know what to do.

Felt kind of like a magician today haha, so it's a good idea to make sure your hands think fast to share the different ways can you pose your hands naturally with the product. Casting photographers often like to see your ability to work naturally with a product.

You need to know how work with products naturally because this will come up within print modeling castings, and have the instinct to know how to make the product look great and also you.

This goes for any product campaign casting head to toe. Test yourself grab an accessory product in your closet, a hat, a handbag, a shoe, a scarf, stand infront of the mirror, now model it naturally, in a way you'd really use it. Same thing in your beauty bag, grab a mascara, a lip gloss, a nail polish, hold it with your hand, use it like you normally would, think about beauty ads and commercials. Same with skincare and technology and realy any item you can hold and use.

In print modeling it is all about products and print models are needed to represent the image of a brand and also parts models are used to hold products...I am sure you have seen ads of hand models holding Nooks and kitchen tools and accessories and mobile devices. It might sound corny but I suggest practicing naturally posing and holding products - as if you would hold and use them in real life- everything from tweezers to handbags to a cell phone.

Some samples shots of myself holding some items in my beauty bag. (This would not go in my portfolio, but sometimes your agencies might ask you for candid shots -raw, natural of your hands and self as is and how you look on a typical day -which is why it is good to have candid shots prepared or be able to snap some with your cell phone quickly. I've had my agencies ask for digitals of my hands and "parts" often so keep in mind that candids are good to have handy for your agencies because clients these days like to decide a model by seeing the raw image unphotoshopped. Also when it comes to portfolio shots and candids, stick to NOT showing brands name -logo- in the shot unless it's a tearsheet from when you worked with that brand for a job.)

However, I don't think it is a good idea to become dependent on sleeping supplements all the time or every single day, and only suggest taking them if you really are struggling with sleep and can't fall to sleep after trying other helpful ways to snooze, such as:

Take the time to decompress.
Something that helps me fall asleep is reading a a book /ebook before going to bed, it's relaxing and fun to read but it also can tire the mind, having some uncaffeinated hot tea calms me too and helps me relax, doing yoga can ease stress, also I like to write a to-do list for the next day or write down in my journal my goals for the week and things I need to focus on and make a priority so I don't go to bed stressing about all the things in the works. By writing down my goals and the next day's plans I can also release these bullet points from my mind and fall asleep easier when my mind isn't dwelling on everything I need to do all at once.

Take care of your body.
Also be aware of what you eat and drink during the day. Don't drink coffee, soda or energy drinks until 4 pm if you want to get to sleep before midnight! I'm trying to drink less coffee, it's hard, I know, but I'm trying to be aware of how much coffee I drink because actually it makes me more tired mid-day and makes it so hard to sleep. And be aware what you order on nights out with the girls, that Red Bull and Vodka has Red Bull in it! So obviously you won't be able to get to bed soon. Remember also to cut sugars before bed. Fill your body and brain with water and fruit and veggies for energy throughout the day, snack on an apple, yogurt, a granola bar to get a boost during your day, and add some exercise to your day, even walking or for 30 minutes, moving your body can inspire tiredness at the end of the day.

Take care of your mind.
I find that relaxing my mind helps me sleep and involves finding a peaceful thought and being in a calm state of mind. To release all my stress and worry and focus on all I am thankful for and all that I hope and plan to do for others and getting back to the inner me daily, and to help get me to dreamland.

If all else fails, listening to soothing instrumentals music can inspire sleep, or listen to Louis Armstrong sing A Kiss to Build a Dream On!

This post on Nymag.com caught my eye. It's about the best jobs a model can get. The answer: Beauty ads, cosmetic campaigns. Supposedly the best job a model can get has nothing to do with height.

Although this is based on fashion models, who says you have to be tall to model cosmetics or health and beauty products?

So get your beauty shots and close-ups, less makeup is better for these types of shots, include a clean beauty shot on your comp card, height isn't everything but market what you've got.

Favorite Little Thing: Marimekko fabric journal

Hey Girls,

This past week before I went to the Eataly store I stopped by Marimekko which is next door, it's colorful essence intrigued me.

The store is full of designs from different designers and artists that bring to life colorful accessories, home goods, tea pots and clothing and even shower curtains, the store is packed with goodies you could spend 30 minutes just looking around, there are also awesome journals and cute coin purses too which are great stocking stuffers also and cute gifts for friends and family.

I wanted to share with you this Marimekko fabric journal I bought. I love writing in a journal daily and I sort out my ideas and goals and projects on the pages. I save all my journals too. I have ALOT of them.

Reading is Stylish wearing Strawberry skirt and button up shirt

Hey Girls,

Today I'm wearing a skirt and a button up shirt from Strawberry, so cute right! And together were under $30. Also wearing tights from Wolford and shoes from Nina shoes. As I mentioned in a previous post I am wearing the skirt a size medium, purposely bigger than my usual smalls and xs sizes because I didn't wanted this skirt to be super super tight, and a medium gives this stretch fabric a bit more stretch and tames it down for day time wear. I think wearing the button up shirt (size small) not tucked in gives the look a more casual feel, perfect reading outfit after a long day.

Height isn't everything.

Have you ever seen a cute skirt skirt but thought, that's a bit too sexy to wear every day....
Well I was in Strawberry store the other day outside Grand Central and I found this wicked cute stretch skirt but I ended up getting it in a size medium, even though I could have worn the small, because you know walking around the city I don't need to be harassed more than usual, and the medium fits slightly less tight and it's something I can wear around the city running errands and also to a meeting or dinner with the girlfriends.

Sometimes going up a size for stretch fabrics can work for petites especially if the skirt is tight to begin with to tame down the ROAR in your strut.

If it doesn't come in your size, make it your size: you might remember this Eddie Bauer skirt from Halloween pics below, but I plan to wear more often, I bought it at Housing Works on 23rd Street for $10 (Loved the fabric) and was 4 sizes too big and a lot longer, and had the tailor take it in and hemmed above my knee, and the extra fabric from the length makes for a perfect scarf too :) also today was reading some of Chanel: A Women of her Own (great book) which you can find at BN.com or Amazon.com :)

Favorite Little Place: Rose Main Reading Room at the New York Public Library

The Constant Model Hustle and Fashion news for all sizes

Hey Girls,
Maybe certain Supermodel's have said they don't get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day, but for the aspiring model it's all about the hustle, gaining experience and working with great brands to bring a nice paycheck. It's a constant hustle to work as a shorter striving model and even when working with a print modeling agency that doesn't mean your career is set or your work is done. Hell no! This might come as a surprise since the media only highlights the Supermodels and successful models making it big. When you are not giraffe tall you will find opportunities in print modeling, and print models really do hustle, modeling is a competitive and tough pursuit, just because you booked a great campaign this month doesn't mean it will be non-stop. Sometimes girls ask me what to do when the agency isn't calling them, or they tell me how they are working with an agency but the agency isn't really sending them out on castings or castings they are fitting for. or the agency isn't calling them at all.

Well in print modeling you are typically working non-exclusive with the agency so of course they have like over a hundred other models who might or might not be good for their next client, so you have to keep your communication with the agency open.

Often when working with an agency it's up to you to keep yourself in the loop, updating and perfecting your photos (which are used to market you so if your photos doesn't show you can do it, you most likely will not be considered-- make sure your photos represent your realistic goals and show off your assets in a professional way), remind the agencies what you have been up to and send them new updated photos or a new comp card, and all the while being your own sort of manager and self-marketer. The modeling agency is a resource for an aspiring model, we get castings and bookings from their clients (editors at magazines, marketing professionals, and those who are hiring models for their advertising and marketing and editorial projects) but there is a constant hustle that happens when you are a print model, and it is a mindset that should be present during the early months of your pursuit.

Getting opportunities and finding success, involves creating it, it all depends how big your goals are, and how much time and energy you can invest in them.

To work as a model and find opportunities/success it takes a strong will, the will to try, the will to hustle, overcome the tough days or slow periods and stay with it. I think being a good marketer, and having ability to be your own self-promoter, approach aspring brands, grow your own network of contacts of editors, brand managers, etc, can also be of great benefit for self-marketing.

Modeling isn't about just waiting for someone else to make it happen for you, sure, in fashion's fantasy land you may hear of girls being discovered, taking on by big agencies, booking work with major fashion brands, but remember fashion it is a very small percent of the working models out there, in print modeing models of all sizes are booked for campaign too, and really it's about YOU, being at the front of your pursuits.

Little Red Riding Hood vists Apple Store in SoHo

Hey Girls,

I hope your Halloween was fun!

I turned Little Red Riding Hood a bit more preppy today with an Eddie Bauer skirt red wool skirt. I recently had the skirt altered down 4 sizes, got it at Shop Housing Works, $10! true, and loved the fabric but was the wrong size, and the extra fabric cut off makes for a cute scarf. (I'll have a video up soon of it in more detail)

Visited the Apple store, the make shift temporary today hehe and later saw some of the parade costumes on 18th and 17th Street! :) The basket is from Shop Housing Works also. Also the Hunter's clothing vest and shirt in the pics below are from Shop Housing Works too.

I saw Grandmother on 5th Ave and 17th Street too!

Hey Girls,

Well I didn't plan on meeting the love of my life today but love can sneak up on you like that, because during my journey in the woods to see grandma this afternoon a big scary, hairy wolf approached me and I was too frightened to move, he was getting closer and closer and then a little too close and I started to run.

I’m pretty fast (even in my high heels) but wasn’t fast enough and that nasty wolf grabbed my cape and pounced on me and I was thinking HOLY SHIT, but thankfully a hunky handsome Hunter heard my scream and was there with his axe to help me…he saved my life really. Oh I jabbed that wolf in the face a few times too with the heels of my shoes, but really it was the Hunter who saved me. Even though it’s been freezing, we spent the day walking in the woods together, and we just had our first kiss, it warmed me right up, and he told me it was fate we met and that he wants to spend even more time with me-- and now we are getting ready to have some dinner and celebrate our kill! Poor grandma, she never got her candy today!

While the Hunter cleans off some blood from his face from killin the wolf I'm reading about this chick Snow White she seems cool but is her face really as white as snow? Well I might give her a call next week for some lunch to find out :) hehe
